Imagine stepping out of a traditional Shepherd’s Hut serenaded by bird song, a huge sky over rolling hills studded with Roman ruins. Your own personal sauna is ready for you to relax and unwind or soothe tired muscles after a long walk along Hadrian’s Wall. This isn’t a crowded spa hotel, it’s Hadrian’s Wall Huts, where unhurried wellness meets epic landscapes. It is glamping with an outdoor spa!
Alternating between the pine‑clad warmth of our outdoor sauna hut and under the trees in nature to cool down with cold water and beautiful views is the perfect way to wind down from busy lives.
We’re so excited to share the latest addition to your stay at Hadrian’s Wall Huts—our brand new sauna, with views of Steel Rigg and exclusively included in your booking. Whether you’re coming for a cosy weekend escape or a post-walk recharge, this is your chance to unwind in total comfort—with one of the best views in Northumberland.
What You’ll Need bring for a Sauna (and What’s Already Here)
Everything you need to slip into relaxation has already been thought of. We provide robes, extra towels, and easy-to-slip-on flip-flops, so you can arrive ready to enjoy yourself—no packing extra bulky gear required. All you really need to bring is a swimming costume and, if you like, your own reusable water bottle to keep nearby. Some like to wear a hat (natural fibres only- so 100% cotton, viscose or wool) and we provide these too. Our sauna benches are clean and well-maintained and towels are refreshed for every guest.

Sauna in Northumberland
As you step into the sauna, you’ll be so pleased you took a holiday in Northumberland National Park, greeted with warmth, peace and an incredible sight—Steel Rigg rising in the distance, with open hills rolling out beneath the window. It’s the kind of view that makes you slow down and take it all in. And once you’re thoroughly toasted, just step outside for a quick cooldown under the outdoor cold water shower, set right beside the sauna. It’s refreshing, energising, and the perfect contrast to the deep heat giving you a real splash of hot & cold therapy. Great for body and soul!
How to use a Sauna Safely & Comfortably
To help you make the most of your time, here are a few friendly pointers written out so you can relax and read through without hunting for bullet points:
First, respect the “200 Rule”: a simple formula where you add the temperature of the sauna in degrees Fahrenheit to the humidity percentage, and aim for around 200. For example, if the sauna is at 180°F, you’ll want roughly 20% humidity. If you like a bit more steam, lower the heat slightly and gently splash fresh water on the stones. This balance keeps the air from feeling too dry or stifling, and makes each breath feel just right.
Next, start gently. Even if you’ve used saunas before, give yourself a first session of no more than five to ten minutes. After that initial heat-up, step out to cool down—take a quick shower, breathe the fresh air, or simply sit and rest. When you feel ready, you can pop back in for another round, but always listen to your body. If at any point you feel dizzy, lightheaded, or overly thirsty, it’s time to step out and hydrate.
Speaking of hydration, keep water on hand at all times. Sip before you enter, a little between sessions, and drink well after you finish. Dehydration is the number-one reason people feel unwell in the sauna, so make a habit of topping up your fluids. If you have an isotonic drink, even better as you’ll replace the salts you lose when sweating.
Finally, there are a few simple don’ts: please avoid the sauna if you’re pregnant, have a fever, or are under the influence of alcohol or strong medications. And once you’re inside, leave your metal jewellery outside—anything that conducts heat can become uncomfortably hot against the skin.

Relaxation & Health Benefits of Saunas
Stepping into our outdoor sauna is more than a way to warm up—it’s a chance to reset, relax, and support your wellbeing. Regular sauna sessions have been linked to reduced stress, deeper sleep, and improved circulation. They can also boost the immune system and improve collegen production in the skin. The intense heat helps to soothe tired muscles after a day of hiking along Hadrian’s Wall, and the cycle of warming and cooling can give your heart a gentle workout of its own. Many guests tell us they leave feeling mentally clearer, physically lighter, and more in tune with the natural world outside the hut.
Heat amplifies circulation, floods muscle with blood and creates blissful, almost meditative release boosting your mood.
Cold awakens circulation, sharpens your mind, and leaves you buzzing with revitalised energy.
